Nouvelle et première édition illustrée de 10 charmantes figures par Stothard et gravées par Neagle, Heath, Angus, sur papier fort. une première édition collective, mais non illustrée avait paru en 1782 pour le premier volume et 1785 pour le second. Reliure en pleine basane brune d'époque. Dos lisse orné de 4 fers à la lyre dans une couronne ; filets, roulettes. Pièce de titre et de tomaison en maroquin rouge. Zone sombre sur le plat supérieur du premier volume. Quelques roussurs dans les marges des gravures, les serpentes n'ayant pas été ôtées. Bel exemplaire. William Cowper préfigure la poésie romantique anglaise, et Coleridge le surnommera "The best modern poet" ; il fit en effet prendre une nouvelle direction à la poésie anglaise en se tournant vers la peinture de la nature, et son oeuvre fut très bien accueilli par une large audience. En cette fin du XVIIIe, on constatera que le goût et la manière anglaise dans la gravure sont fort différents de celui de la France, l'Angleterre tendant très nettement dans ces gravures vers le Romantisme, alors que la France se trouvait en pleine période néo-classique. - Photographies et détails sur www.Edition-Originale.com -

Summary Hildebert of Lavardin is one of the great poets of the Middle Ages, praised for his elegant style by his contemporaries and by modern scholars alike. Two volumes (both first editions 1872) bound together in a beautiful dark blue full leather binding with gilt decoration to the boards and the spine. The binding is slightly rubbed to the edges, with slight cracking to the bottom edge of the spine. but otherwise in very good condition. The binding is signed "Bound for George Rutland, Newcastle, Upon Tyne" We cannot find a binder of this name, but there was a publisher of (primarily) angling and fishing books based in Newcastle in this period, so it is presumably done for him. Inside, there is light to moderate foxing to many of the pages. Rear end papers have a darkening to the edges. This volume includes both the "Poems illustrated" and the subsequent volume "again illustrated" Pagination: viii, 109, [i]. vii, [i], 180 pp.

London Burns, Oates and Washbourne Ltd 1946 Captain Jack (John Newman) Gilbey b.1888 was the older brother of Alfred Newman Gilbey, RC priest and long-time Catholic chaplain of Cambridge University. He was the author of several collections of devotional poetry.
Original cream covered paper covers over cream boards. Titles to both boards and wrapper. There is a frontis photograph of Gilbey at work, and a facsimile of a letter from the Apostolic delegate with a message from the Pope accepting the dedication of the book to him. This book comprised the collected poems from Gilbey's six earlier volumes, and an additional 40 poems included here.
