A thick octavo book of 135 x 205 mm for (xviii) 414 pp. Editor's hardcover binding, wine red cloth, title and author's name written in gold on the top of the spine. Restored binding with the original spine lacking on the top and bottom. Marroon free endpapers. Drawing of the Falls of Itamaraty as frontispice. No errata leaf. 32 pp. of the editor's list of works from 1866 added at the end of the book. One folding map and five illustrations throughout the book. The author was a founder and president of the Alpine Club. Moreas I, 340: 'The author, a British tourist, first visited Rio on the way to Buenos Aires. He returned to Rio later, making excursions into the Sierra dos Orgaos, Petropolis, Therezopolis, and travelling to Juiz de Fora'. Sabin 31925: 'Highly commended by the Saturday Review'. Naylor 106.
