************************************************** Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1940. In English. First edition. One of 525 numbered copies, this one bearing no. 97. A 4to volume of 292 x 227 mm. Bound in full publisher's cloth with dust jacket. (9) 106 pp. of plates, 92 in b&w and 8 in color. Introduction by Rockwell Kent. SIGNED by Candido Portinari on the second white guard in dark blue pastel. Color plate in frontispiece (the one visible in black and white on the dust jacket), title page, 9 pp. Plate pages are unpaginated. Edition numbering at the end of the work. Candido Portinari (1903-1962) is one of the greatest painters of Brazil. Creator of an influential neorealist style, he painted more than five thousand works, from small sketches to monumental paintings such as the Guerra e Paz panels, which were donated to the United Nations headquarters in 1956. Initially not highly regarded by Brazilian elites, both for his style perceived as too heavy and for his paintings that focused heavily on laborers, Portinari was appreciated by government officials, who saw him as a bearer of national identity, by a large Brazilian public, and by fans in the United States, where this book did much to make him known. His autographed dedications are quite rare and his signature sought after.‎
