Renga è una forma poetica collettiva estremamente popolare in Giappone, dove si sviluppò tra l'VIII e il XV secolo. Nell'aprile del 1969, quattro poeti si incontrarono a Parigi per una settimana: il messicano Octavio Paz, l'italiano Eduardo Sanguinetti, l'inglese Charles Tomlison e il francese Jacques Roubaud. Era appena nato il primo renga occidentale. Il risultato è emozionante. L'incontro tra un'antica tradizione letteraria orientale e quattro poeti moderni, accomunati dal gusto per le forme rigorose e i giochi combinatori, ha dato vita a un grande poema moderno: quattro poeti, quattro lingue europee, una regola del gioco giapponese, e alla fine un testo unico, voce unica con risonanza quadrupla.
