One of the most prominent representatives of indigenism and magical realism. He was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Ecuador and advocated for the rights of indigenous people. Jorge Icaza Coronel was one of the founders of the Union of Writers and Artists of Ecuador and served as the director of the Ecuadorian National Library. He worked as a cultural attache at the Embassy of Ecuador in Argentina and served as the ambassador of Ecuador to the USSR, Poland, and East Germany. After the publication of his novel ""Huasipungo"" in 1934, Jorge Icaza Coronel achieved international fame.
