From 1913 to 1925, he served as the curator of the Tretyakov Gallery. He authored the fundamental work ""History of Russian Art,"" which was also realized by I.N. Knebel. This publication not only includes color reproductions mounted on separate cardboard sheets but also numerous photographs of sketches, drafts, and fragments of the artist's paintings.
