The book consists of two separate parts (the second part misbound between the introduction of the first part and the actual dictionary); Part I is a general biographical dictionary of European composers, with an introduction by the editor J.H. Mees and one by Castil-Blaze (16 pp), followed by the Castil-Blaze dictionary. Part II is a dictionary of Flemish composers , especially the Polyphonic School preceded by a 40 pp article on the history of Western music 14th - 16th century and a study on the organisation of an academy of music. Part II was written by J. H. Mees, who was also the editor of Grétry's Memoirs published one year after this dictionary."
