Sa contribution à la pensée pédagogique irlandaise est décrite comme "by far the most important" par Atkinson dans Irish education : a history of educational institutions (1969).Dans la préface de cet ouvrage, Bryce définit les deux axes de sa théorie : "A good system of education for the lower classes, distinct from the rest of the people, cannot exist ; and [...] all endeavours to improve education, however zealous and generous they may be, must utterly fail [...] unless means be provided for enabling teachers to study education as a liberal art, founded upon the philosophy of the Human Mind".
