‎Symbolae Facultatis Litterarum Lovaniensis - Series B : 32. De negentiende eeuw was een eeuw van vooruitgang en expansie, en daardoor ook van optimisme. Er leek geen beperking te zijn aan de mogelijkheden die de mens in zijn evolutie kon bereiken. Toch had de medaille ook een keerzijde en groeide de bezorgdheid over wat er in de evolutie zoal mis kon lopen. Het codewoord dat deze bezorgdheid zou domineren en ontsluiten, was 'degeneratie'. Artsen en antropologen, kunstenaars en psychologen, en vele anderen bogen zich vanaf 1860 over het fenomeen, ook in Belgie. ‎
