Cölln (Köln), bey Johan Buchssmacher, 1587, small in-4°, 192 x 149 mm, title with copper engraved vignette (verso blank) + (3) + 70 pp (numbered I - LXX) + (4)nn pp + (1)(bl), each page contains a copper engraved portrait of a French king, with an explanation printed underneath, with a typographical border consisting of a double fillet. Modern half vellum binding, marbled boards. Title a bit stained and thumbed, some pages slightly stained or dusty, last pages with a marginal clear waterstain, still an acceptable copy. Some of the plates were engraved by Virgil Solis, (signed with his initials). The portraits in medalform were taken from the original designs of C.Corneille. They are surrounded by large rectangular ornamental borders. Within these borders, under the medallions, are 62 different rectangular scenes. The first edition of these plates was issued with a Latin text in Augsburg by Gerlach & vom Bergs Erben in 1576. A third edition appeared in Cologne in 1598 (BMSTC 292). All editions are quite rare. This first Köln edition is very rare. Only 1 copy recorded in the USTC - Nr. 664945 ( copy of the Bayerische Staatsbibliotheek ).
