The author Sirèn (1879 - 1966) was the pre-eminent sinologist of his generation. He became professor at Stockholm uinversity. Many of the plates are based on photographs made by the author during his many travels to China. Sadly some of sites he documented do not exist anymore.. The set belonged to Adolphe Stoclet (1871 - 1949) , belgian finance-and industrial tycoon, famous as builder of the Stoclet palace in Brussels, a world famous Art Nouveau building designed by the Austrian architect Josef Hoffmann. (an invoice of the publisher, for vol. III to Stoclet is inserted in vol.III).Without doubt one of the nicest sets ever to come on the market.
