S.l. (London-Antwerp) , s.l. (1649 - 1695), collection of 126 copper engraved plates (2 title plates and 124 portraits). The portraits are numbered 1 - 120, (number 117 is missing). The four extra plates are. [1] Orbis Roma by Antonius Goebouvv - reproduced in De Bie's ''Gulden Cabinet''. [2] Nicolas Bruyant, - Van Dyck pinxit, P. Pontius sculp. Meyssens exc. [3] Adriaen Brouwer, - Robert Smith sculps. [4] Richard Collin (born 1627 Luxembourg) portrait name ''Rciahdr Cloiln'' (sic). Bound in contemporary full leather,(binding worn, joints partly split , but still holding). Interior fine, no stains or foxing. Quite large paper copy ( height 319 mm ). The second title page (in French) pertains to an Antwerp edition by Jean Meyssens, dated 1649. The first 100 plates in our album derive from this edition. E.G. The first 22, identically numbered in upper right corner, are all engraved by TH. Galle , and some bear still the name of D. Lampsonius. Lampsonius was the first ,in 1572, to compile an album with portraits of famous painters. Provenance: On the title page a handwritten note : ''The gift of Tho[ma]s Carew Esqr. to Richard Phelps, 1748.. The painter Richard Phelps (c.1710-1785) trained with Thomas Hudson and worked in Somerset (Porlock) producing portraits mainly of local families. The British Museum holds an album of his work which contains a portrait of Thomas Carew. Interesting portrait album illustrating the great influence , in the wake of Van Dyck, in Dutch-Flemish portrait painting in 18th c. England.
