Jean Bourgeois .S.J. (Maubeuge, formerly in the Southern Netherlands, 1572 - 1653), led the jesuit college at Valenciennes and subsequently at Saint-Omer. This very handsomely printed, illustrated and bound book is devoted to the worship in the Roman Catholic church of the Holy Mary. This worship, with Antwerp as a centre, became a weapon in the counter-reformative action against Protestantism.. The illustrations, with a caption in Latin underneath served the didactical purposes of the jesuits in their drive to bring the catholic religion to the young and uneducated. This is the first edition . USTC 1003765. DBS Vol. II, 35, nr. 4. BCNI 7029. Marvellous copy.
