The Jesuit Niklaas Trigault ( or Trigaut ) (Douai 1577 - Hangzhou 1628) , Chinese name Jin Nige Sibaio, first visited China in 1610, he returned to Rome in 1614 . With him he brought the extensive notes made by Ricci on the history of the Jesuit mission in China, together with the first accurate western description of this country. He translated these notes in Latin and added himself many interesting observations on China and the Chinese. The book was published in Augsburg in 1615. Our book is a copy from the second enlarged edition, the first complete one, reworked by the author. This second edition was first published in Lyon in 1616. See De Backer-Sommervogel vol.
