Only some minor damage at the lower turn in and a 3 cm split at the upper joint. Interior very crisp and clean with only some faint spots and water stains at the last 25 pp. With the manuscript ex-libris of P.Simoens - 1716 written underneath the engraved title, next to this ex-libris : a small printed ex-libris of L'Abbé Felles de la PoterieA nice and sound of the first and only edition of this very important emblematic jesuit baroque publication. When this jubilant book on the centenary of the Jesuit order was published in Antwerp many eyebrows were raised in Rome and Paris. It stressed ideological differences which were eventually to lead to the suppression of the Jesuit Order more than 100 years later (see Vermeylen A.: Questionnement du Baroque, 1986, essay by M.Fumaroli). The work contains 125 emblematical engravings by Cornelis Galle. Apart from the history of the first 100 years of the Jesuit order it also contains the history of the missionary activities in Brazil, Florida, Mexico, Japan, Russia, etc. (Jesuits, missiology, church history, emblemata; Landwehr 378)."
