‎McLEOD, Norman :‎
‎Illustrations to the Epitome of the Ancient History of Japan, including illustrations to Guide Book. Collected and arranged by N. Mcleod. Second edition.‎

‎16. Kiyoto ( Kyoto ), no publisher, 1878, oblong in-8°, ( Japanese style binding), 17,5 x 27 cm,Printed title, 4 pp of introductory text printed on 3 lvs, 81 uncoloured engraved plates on 46 lvs ( mostly printed back to back) and 1 contents leaf. Text in English, Original Japanese binding of limp cloth, some marginal staining binding a bit discoloured, but overall in good condition. The engravings are by Japanese artists and show temples, views, portraits, history scenes, musical instruments, ships etc.. Some of the plates have captions in English. Many of the plates have more than one illustration. Therefore there are around 150 or so illustrations. The author published in 1876 in Nagasaki a book on the history of Japan. This album with illustrations was intended as a companion to that study. His history book is famous because in it he bizarrely claimed that the Japanese were descended from a lost Jewish tribe. This book is very rare. ( Only 5 entries in the Worldcat )..‎
