Haarlem, JM.Schalekamp, s.d. (1871-1873), in-folio, 40,5 x 30 cm, 161 pp + 14 photographs, bound in black halfleather, raised gilt spine, small traces of use at binding but a good/fine copy. This publication was published in installments from 1871 onwards. The original photographs were by the Amsterdam photographers Wegner et Mottu . The illustrations are drawings made by Madou ( 1796 - 1877). This illustrator was one of the most important Belgian lithographers of the 19th century and is telling that here at the end of his life his drawings are reproduced by photographical means rather than lithography. This significant publication marks the change from lithography to photography as a technique to illustrate art books.
