Uniformly bound in contemporary brown half roan (demi-basane), boards covered with brown paper, smooth decorated spines with red leather title label, yellow colored edges. The full page engravings are by F. Huot. and engraved by Fme Demonchy. First edition of the French translation of Hermes' ''Sophiens Reise von Memel nach Sachsen ''. The French translator Pierre Bernard de Lamare writes in his preface that he adapted the original German edition to the French public by e.g. deleting the many theological discussions for which the French public has no taste. The original work of 5 volumes has been reduced to 3 volumes in this French edition. This German novel was one of the most widely read in 18th c. Germany. The author (1738 - 1821) was partly inspired for this work by Samual Richardson. Fine copies."
