"6. Bruxelles, H. Remy, Imprimeur du Roi, 1834, in-folio, 281 pp, sewn, original printed wrapper. Uncut copy, wrapper seriously waterstained, interior is clean, notwithstanding the dustsoiled margins. First major law reform proposal for the young Belgian kingdom which had until now (1834) a criminal law system mainly based on the Code Napoléon and some reforms made during the short period when the Southern Netherlands were re-united with the Netherlands (1815-1830). The document is printed in two columns. The left hand side shows the current article ; on the right hand the proposed new article. 487 Articles are treated. Page 70 contains a rather extensive table with the statistics of the capital punishments pronounced or executed on belgian soil in the period 1793 -1833 with a subdivision according the nature of the crime (12 categories). On the reverse of the table is some information on punishment reduction and mercy measures. Provenance ; with the manuscript ex-libris on the front cover of Jean Thienpont (1774 - 1863). This document was thus almost certainly handed over by the minister Joseph Lebeau (1794 - 1865) to Jean Thienpont. In 1830 both were members of the Belgian Provisional Government (gouvernement provisoire - voorlopig bewind). (history of Belgian criminal law). Text in French. Livre en français."
