Lyon, Jean de Tournes et Guillaume Gazeau, 1553, in-16°, (64)nn pp + 781 pp + (3) nn pp (complete), bound in somewhat later (17th century ?) full calf, raised gilt spine, with red leather title label, all edges painted red, marbled endpapers. Binding with some minor wear and minor restorations at extremeties. Title page a bit thumbed, small inkstain ar margin of last 5 leaves, printed marginal notes slightly shaved by the binder at some pages. Still a fine copy in an old French binding. Book in French. Johannes Carion , astronomer, mathematician and historian (Bietigheim 1499 - Magdeburg 1537) wrote this world chronicle which was first published in German in the town of Wittenberg in 1532. It served throughout the 16th century as a textbook for the chronology of the world, which he described as being 6000 years old. Much of the text was edited and corrected by Melanchton. Jean Le Blond , seigneur de Branville (Normandy), made this French translation and adaptation which was first published in Paris in 1547(= 1548). He is also known for his translation of Thomas Morus' Utopia (1550).
