".: @. La Haye ( Den Haag ), Pierre Gosse Junior, 1762, in-4° , 2 parts bound in one volume, [I] (4)nn pp + xvi pp + 160 pp + 25 folding engraved plates numbered I-XXV ; [II] (4)nn pp + 196 pp + 31 folding plates numbered XXVI-XXXXXVI. Bound in contemporary half roan with richly decorated spine, marbled boards, red speckeld edges. Some minor wear at the corners, fine crisp interior. Very fine copy. Text in French. (Livre en français). Nearly one third of the book (pp.83 - 196 of the second part) is devoted to the history of Chinese warfare. In an introduction the author states that he gathered commentaries and historical notes on military operations in China. It seems that most of his information came from a text by Joseph-Baptiste Jouve - Vojeu De Brunem. ( see John Lust item 436) . (See also ; Colson, L'Art de la guerre de Machiavel à Clausewitz, pp. 170-172). This item not in J. Lust. ''Azar Gat ; The Origins of Military Thought, p.33 '' states that the author responds here to the emerging global view of our world, and to the fashionable interest stimulated by Voltaire, in the vast, remote and ancient Chinese civilization."
