According to McEachern (Bibliography of the writings of J.J.Rousseau) this in-12° edition was the first printing of Rousseau's Emile but it was issued after the in-8° edition (see pp.16-17.) In September 1761 a contract was signed between the Maréchale de Luxembourg, acting on behalf of Rousseau, and the publisher Nicolas Duchesne. Duchesne made in November 1761 an agreement with the Dutch publisher Jean Néaulme for a parallel edition outside France. Meanwhile Duchesne printed this in-12° edition with the false imprint ; ''Amsterdam'' and a re-imposed in-8° edition with the false imprint; ''A La Haye''. The in-8° edition was issued first.
