MDCXXXVIII Romae superiorum permissu.....‎

‎" Romae ( Roma ) s.n. ; Paris chez la veufue du defunt Perier, rue des fossez, Ste Germain vis à vis l'Hotel de Sourdy, 1638 (ca. 1650), in-folio, 382 x 256 mm, (1) leaf + 100 leaves of plates (2 folded) + (2) leaves; all ill. (engravings ) . Notes;Engraved title with dedication and title as above, mounted (see note about size below) ; 100 engraved plates without letterpress; two leaves of index engraved. For various issues of this collection cf. Brunet. Many of the plates are signed 'P.B.' There are 5 states of the engraved title--cf. Robert-Dumesnil. Peintre-Graveur T.VI p.177 The first plate ""Laocoon"" (foliated in bottom right hand corner) has ""Franciscus Perrier Burgund. delin. et sculp. Romae superior. licentia 1638."" With colophon on last index leaf ""Romae superiorum licentia. An. M.D.CXXXVIII."" The images vary in reversal which, together with other variations, encourage the conclusion that the work was printed and reworked over a period of time to meet public demand and that possibly other variations exist in copies held elsewhere. Engraved t.p. (also refered to as the frontispiece) printing 24 x 15.5; other plate marks vary somewhat according to shape of sculpture depicted. The two folded plates are ca. 24 x 38 cm and 32 x 25 cm. Bound in an unassuming old half leather binding with marbled boards. Allthough dated 1638 this is most probably a re-issue of c. 1650 (death of Perrier). Other issues exist with added to the first plate; ''chez la v(euve) de F. Chereau''. These appear to be of ca. 1730. (With thanks to the Bodleian and Durham-Routh entries in the Copac catalogue)."‎
