Blaeuw, woonende op't Water inde gulden Sonnewyser, 1631, in-folio, 418 x 273 mm, (2)nn pp (typographical title) + (2)(frontispiece portrait) + pp 5-95 with 42 fullpage copper engravings + (1)(bl) , complete. Bound in old vellum over boards, spine damaged with some small loss of vellum. Title and some of the first leaves thumbed and with some dustsoiling, marginal tear repaired in leaf A5, verso of leaf A6 repaired with loss of a few letters in the Italian text, plate XXXV printed upside down. In all still a fine/good copy. Manuscript ex-libris on title page '' Leuneschlos ''. Rare quadrilingual edition of Vignola's classical text on Architecture. Text in Italian, Dutch, French and German. The first edition appeared in Rome in 1562. This edition has been augmented with a text and illustrations by Michelangelo Buonarotti (plates 35 - 42). Three centuries before the European Union the clever Amsterdam printer Willem Blaeu published this edition in 4 languages to cover the European market. See Millard '' Northern European Books '' item 132, pp. 375-376. They also refer to a first edition by Jansz in 1617, according to a note by Casotti, but this edition has been elusive until now.
