‎"16. Parisiis ( Paris ) , apud Fredericum Leonard, 1675, in-folio, 36 x 23 cm, (8)nn pp (title with larger woodcut printer's mark, engraved head-piece) + xxvii pp + (1)(bl) + 632 pp + (46)(indices) + (1)(errata) + (1)(bl) (complete). Bound in comtemporary full calf, raised gilt back, sprinkled edges, binding worn, joints and extremeties expertly restored, interior fine except for a very few pages which are slightly browned. Still a fine copy of a rare book. Adrien de Valois, brother of Henri de Valois, both ''historiographer'' to the French king, compiled here a real geographical dictionary of France, written in Latin and based on Latin authors like Caesar, Ptolemaeus, Strabon... but also with the use of mediaeval and Merovigian sources; Gregory of Tours, Sugar abbot of Saint-Denis etc. The book's preface is a toponymical essay avant la lettre and gives some general ideas about the coming about of place names.
