" Straßsburg, Balthassar Beck , 1546, in-folio, 30 x 19 cm, (12) nn pp (with woodcut title page) + (296)pp numbered ii - cxlviii (errors lxxiiii for lxxiii , lxxxv for lxxxvi), complete, bound in old blindstamped leather, with the usual minor stains and thumbing, one tear repaired on pp. xix , one margin repaired at page lviii (no loss of text or legibility), in all nicely preserved. Fine complete copy of Fries' famous Spiegel der Artzney here revised by Otto Brunsfels. The first edition was published in 1518. It was the first publication in German on internal medicine. On the title-page of our edition is mentioned that all editions before 1532 are now obsolete; ''sollen widerrufft und falsch declariert sein''. Our edition contains two prefaces by Fries and one by Brunfels. In the preface, dated 24 th March 1530, here reprinted, the author defends himself against allegations that he debased medicine by publishing his book in German, which attracted lowly educated people into the profession, according to his enemies. He even refers to Martinus Luther and his translation of the Bible against the wishes of the anointed (gesalbten). The woodcut title page contains 12 double portraits of famous physicians and Adonis and Venus in a flower garden. (See Richard Durling, Bethesda collection item 1666, Benzing Nr. 34).
