IGNATIUS DE LOYOLA - [ ] Illustrated edition - FECHOZ-LETOUZEY ( binder ) - [ ] Illustrated edition:

Antverpiae ( Antwerpen ), Michiel Cnobbaert, sub signo S. Petri, 1689, in-8°, 17,3 x 10,5 cm, engraved portrait frontispiece + title with engraved vignet + 279 pp + (18) nn pp (index, last pp bl.) + 54 full page copper engravings outside the text. Bound in 19th c. full black morocco, both covers with a triple gilt fillet. Gilt lace work on the inside cover margins. All edges gilt and marbled. French master binding signed by Fechoz-Letouzey. Very fine copy notwithstanding a very small scratch on the front cover. This is a good example of French 19th c. bibliophile taste whereby books from the 17th c. were rebound in a refined 19th full morocco binding with tastfull gilding. In the process the book was washed. The treatment here was reserved for a fine illustrated copy of the main work of the founder of the Jesuit order. This nicely illustrated edition first appeared in Antwerp in 1676 and was reprinted in 1689. (See De Backer-Sommervogel vol. V pp 61- who by error credits this edition with 85 (!) illustrations)..
