Estius (born in Gorinchem) was one of the main theologists of the Counter Reformation, he studied theology at Louvain university (Valk college) and became chancelor of Douai university, here he worked together with e.g. Allen and Thomas Stapleton to edit the so called Bible of Douai, which served as the standard bible for English-speaking catholics during three centuries. His Sententiarum Commentaria (Commentary on Pierre Lombard's IV Libri Sententiarum ) first appeared in Douai three years after his death. This is the fourth Paris edition. It still contains the expression of his doubt about the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary. These doubts were expurgated in the 1720 Naples edition. (Vacant-Mangenot, Dictionnaire Vol. 5 pp. 875)."
