.: Antverpiae, (Antwerpen) Apud Henricum & Cornel. Verdussen, 1708, suite of 30 engravings on japan paper (modern printings). These emblematical illustrations were first issued in 1628 by H.Aertssens. In this first edition most of the plates were signed by G.Collaert (MPM A 3980). A second edition followed in 1639 (MPM A 4012). For this third edition obviously a new set of plates was made. They are all unsigned and have received a thin frameline. (MPM A 2802, B.C.N.I. n°16672,FUNCK pp. 338). Funck notes that ''l'édition de 1708 (a) de très mauvaises figures. Quelques figures n'avaient pas paru dans l'édition de 1629, mais sont mal gravées. After collation we can ascertain that the plates 4, 6, 14, 18, have indeed been added to the third edition, and that they appear in a slightly different style. Our overall judgment on the quality of the suite is however much less harsh than Funck. This is a nice set of emblematical engravings printed on thick japan paper. The set is kept in red cloth box.
