Tolkien Companion and guide - Chronology, 2017) : rnPage 196 :rnLibrairie E. Droz of Paris will publish it under d'Ardenne's name only, to satisfy requirements of her degree at Liège; but for this, the book would appear as a joint work by d'Ardenne and Tolkien. Simonne d'Ardenne herself privately refers to it as a joint effort, and some of Tolkien's colleagues will recognize his contribution. The Seinte Iulienne probably contains more of his views on early Middle English than anything he will publish under his own name. rnAlso, page 198 :rnE.V. Gordon says in a letter of 3 June 1936, "he has read the edition of Seinte Iulienne, and is 'grieved that your [Tolkien] name is not attached to it, because...practically all that is especially valuable in it is recognisably yours. There is really no other piece of Middle English editing to touch it. And the financial interest in it is really not sufficient reward or return for the wealth of new material you have given'. (Tolkien Papers, Bodleian Library, Oxford).. The book is dedicated to Tolkien, who is also is also acknowledged by d'Ardenne in the prefatory note: "I am deeply indebted for assistance from the beginning of my work on this text, and especially during the revision of the glossary and grammar.". Many references to Tolkien works are made in the text and notes. Tolkien was appointed supervisor of Simonne Rosalie Thérèse Odile d'Ardenne in Feb 1932 (Hammond, op.cit, page 174)rnSimonne Rosalie Thérèse Odile d'Ardenne (1899-1986) was a Belgian philologist specialising in Middle English. In February 1932, she was admitted to Oxford where Tolkien supervised her thesis, an edition of the text Liflade ant te Passiun of Seinte Iuliene. For a year she lived with the Tolkien family at 20 Northmoor Road and became a close friend of the family, particularly Priscilla Tolkien. Her thesis (published under her own name in 1936) earned her a doctorate from the University of Liège and two years later she was taken on as a professor of comparative grammar. In November 1937, she produced a French translation of the first version of Farmer Giles of Ham (not published until 1975) and was suggested by Tolkien to his publisher as a possible translator of The Hobbit, which had just been published.rnD'Ardenne became a close friend of the Tolkien family, and J.R.R. visited her in Belgium in the 1950s.rn‎
