Program and Conditions of the All-Union Competition for the Best Monument to Karl Marx in Moscow Moscow 1957/Programma i usloviya vsesoyuznogo konkursa na luchshiy pamyatnik Karlu Marksu v Moskve. M. 1957 g. Installation of a monument to Karl Marx in Moscow was planned in the early years of Soviet power as part of Lenins plan for monumental propaganda. Vladimir Lenin considered the monument one of the key objects of the program and in 1920 a competition for its design and construction was announced. On May 1 1920 the day of the first-ever All-Russian Subbotnik in Teatralnaya Square (1919-1991-Sverdlov Square) the first stone was laid for the foundation of the future monument. However the plan was not implemented and instead of the monument on the square for a long time there was a granite block with the text The first stone of the monument to the great leader and teacher of the world proletariat Karl Marx.
