He lectured at Oxford was involved in pastoral work and wrote works on biblical history. His largest work The Life and Time of Jesus the Messiah published in 1883 was one of the first Christian scholars to draw extensive material from the Jewish tradition to cover Gospel history especially its religious-historical background.
