Summary The present volume provides the first critical edition of the sermons of Peter Abelard gathered by the author on behalf of the nuns of the Paraclete, as Abelard's dedicatory letter to Heloise makes clear. The collection contains 35 sermons, 33 of which were edited in 1616 by Fran ois d'Amboise and Andr Duchesne. Unfortunately the manuscript kept at the Sorbonne, used for the editio princeps, has disappeared. Only 6 out of the 33 sermons have survived in three recently discovered manuscripts. A supplementary sermon (s. 34) of the same collection and a fragment of an extra sermon (against the Cistercians) turned up respectively in one of those manuscripts. Modern scholars have provided editions of the eight sermons that survived in the manuscripts. Well acquainted with Peter Abelard's writing skills and style, the present editor investigated and compared the six sermons of the editio princeps that are also present in the manuscripts. After this profound research, he took on the immense job of re-editing the entire collection. Where necessary he intervened on the basis of his knowledge of the language and ideas of Abelard.

Summary Providing the critical edition of Augustine's sermones ad populum LXXI-XCIV, this volume complements CC SL XLI Aa (sermones ad populum LI-LXX A; 2008) and in doing so completes the critical edition of the Church Father's homilies on the Gospel of Matthew. Furthermore, the new volume provides an update of the text-critical introduction to all sermons on Matthew that was offered in CC SL XLI Aa. Most sermons of the series LXXI-XCIV were edited for the last time in 1683 by the Maurists; others were critically edited more recently by Germain Morin, Cyrille Lambot, Pierre-Patrick Verbraken, Fran ois Dolbeau, Luc De Coninck, Bertrand Coppieters 't Wallant, Roland Demeulenaere, and Gert Partoens. For the present volume, Luc De Coninck and Bertrand Coppieters 't Wallant, assisted by Roland Demeulenaere, have made entirely new editions of most sermons belonging to the first group, and revised the editions of almost all homilies belonging to the second. In all cases, this was done on the basis of an extensive study of the manuscripts and with a state-of-the-art knowledge of the stemmatical relations between each sermon's direct and indirect witnesses. The critical editions of four sermons featuring in the famous codex Mainz Stadtbibliothek I 9 (sermones LXXII auct., LXXXVI, LXXXIX, and XC A) have been procured by Fran ois Dolbeau, while Gert Partoens has revised Morin's edition of sermo LXXII A and republished his own new edition of sermo LXXXII, and while Nicolas De Maeyer has edited the fragmentary sermon LXXVII C. Les sermons de Voragine sont moins connus que la "Légende dorée"; pourtant ils eurent un grand succès et furent imprimés dès 1473. Trois parties : - Sermones de tempore. - Sermones de sanctis. - Sermones de quadrage[simales]. Les trois parties ont chacune leur propre page de titre avec vignette gravée et encadrement, le premier en noir et rouge. Caractères gothiques sur deux colonnes. Nombreuses lettrines dans le texte; marque typographique de Giunta à la fin de chaque partie. Inscriptions biffées au bas du titre. Petit travail de vers dans le coin supérieur des deux premiers feuillets. Une peau de vélin récente a été apposée sur les plats. Ex-libris du XXe : "Veritas, Hubert Elie". Apres le Supplementum I consacre aux Opera grammatica, voici, pour l'ensemble du Thesaurus Augustinianus, le Supplementum II qui prend en compte les Sermones nouissimi de saint Augustin, a savoir l'ensemble des sermons decouverts par Francois Dolbeau (auquel d'ailleurs le volume est dedie), et ce, selon les dernieres mises a jour communiquees par l'editeur a l'equipe du CTLO ainsi qu'un sermon complete par l'abbe Raymond Etaix (le n? 218). Ces nouveaux sermons ne representent pas moins de 104.854 formes, et 15.933 formes normalisees differentes. Ce Supplementum offre une enumeratio formarum, l'index inverse des formes, la table des frequences decroissantes, l'index des normalisations operees et la concordance generale de ces Sermones nouissimi. Seule la concordance figure sur microfiches classees en fin de volume. La liste imprimee des formes permet d'observer egalement l'ensemble des formes attestees dans le corpus general des sermons et elle offre d'interessants points de comparaison : la frequence selon les nouveaux sermons, la frequence generale pour tous les sermons de saint Augustin selon le nouvel etat de la question, le rappel de la frequence selon l'etat ancien, le rappel aussi des frequences que presente le reste de l'activite sermonnaire de l'eveque d'Hippone, a savoir les commentaires a saint Jean et les Enarrationes in Psalmos. Il est hautement significatif d'observer ces diverses frequences. On constatera ainsi tous les changements apportes par rapport au status quaestionis que representait le Thesaurus Augustinianus publie en 1989. On y repere des lemmes qui ne figurent pas dans le Thesaurus linguae latinae et meme certains qui ne se trouvent actuellement dans aucun dictionnaire publie ! The Sermones ad populum are a part of Augustine's work that, especially in its relation to the rest of the Augustinian corpus, deserves more attention. Frequently studied topics are the transmission of the sermons, the bishop's homiletic methodology, his use of Scripture and classical rhetoric, his view on the episcopate, his theology of proclamation and his opinions about the cult of the martyrs. Augustine's sermons also serve as an invaluable source for the study of the North African Church and its liturgical practices at the end of the fourth and the beginning of the fifth century. The dating and the chronology of the sermons have likewise been the object of many publications. As a matter of fact, they are still much debated. On May 29-31, 2008, the research units History of Church and Theology and Literary Studies: Latin Literature of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven organized an international conference on Augustine's Sermones ad populum in collaboration with the Scientific Committee of the Series Latina of Corpus Christianorum (Brepols Publishers), the Revue benedictine (Maredsous) and the Augustinian Historical Institute (Heverlee). The conference was intended to bring together scholars who have recently made important contributions to the study of Augustine's work in general and his preaching in particular, as well as specialists in the field of Early Christian homiletics.
