Il fait preuve d'une volonté de confesser sa vie d'homosexuel, il est en conflit permanent entre ses pulsions, son éducation et sa morale. Il est l'un des créateur de la 'Nouvelle Revue Française', adossée sur la Maison Gallimard. Il est l'un des premiers à lutter contre le colonialisme et à comprendre les leurres que représente l'U. R. S. S. et le fascisme. Il obtient le Prix Nobel de littérature, en 1951.‎
