‎London, George G. Harrap & Co Ltd, 1935. 1 volume in-4, 141 pp., publishers tan paper covered boards with drawing of a chinese woman's face, 32 mounted black and white photographic portrait plates in duotone, with accompanying text, one colour illustration by Shine. A very fine copy with its dust jacket showing some tears and lack of paper on the spine.‎

‎First edition of this nicely illustrated volume. Ellen Thorbecke was the wife of the former Netherlands Minister in China. She published books on Hong Kong, Shanghai and Peking. "The author, during four years in the Far East, made a close study of chinese politics and economics as well as the psychological pecularities and customs of the people. She has selected thirty-two photographic portraits which illustrate varying characteristics of the Chinese - of men and women in different walks of life- who represent the old and the new order, from the aristocrat and the philosopher to the humble rickshaw-coolie and the sing-song girl of the tea-house.‎
