‎This publication appears on the occasion of the exhibition TRANSFERTS, which will take place at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels from 21 June through 14 September 2003. TRANSFERTS will bring together works of African artists from different generations and will be part of a series of events for Africalia to take place in Belgium from March through October 2003.nnCreated in 2001, Africalia is a development project whose objective is to take into account the role of culture within the economical, technological and political development in Africa. Its goal is to develop collaborations by promoting and supporting cultural African creations. nnThe term TRANSFERTS is often used in connection with migratory or financial movements. Thus the title of this exhibition refers to the incessant fluxes of people, goods, information, and ideas that characterise our world and cause it to be in a permanent state of mutation. Two underlying themes structure TRANSFERTS, without systematically defining its parcours. The first theme, ''the death of the other'', is a voluntarily provocative statement which alludes to the current discourse on globalisation. The second theme is concerned with the ''acceleration of history''. Wars, disasters, terrorist attacks, receive much attention in the media and create an incessant state of emergency, a continuous feeling of anguish. To what extent do these also influence the course of history?nMany works are being created especially for this exhibition, which will stretch over 1600m2. Its dynamic parcours is an open invitation for visitors to reflect and experiment. Hicham Benohoud, Bili Bidjocka, Godfried Donkor, Alfredo Jaar, William Kentridge, Abdoulaye Konat?, Ingrid Mwangi, Otobong Nkanga, Aim? Ntakiyica, Keith Piper, Tracey Rose, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Fatimah Tuggar, Minnette Vari and Sue Williamson are just some of the artists invited to participate. The diversity of their work confirms that no theory could possibly circumscribe the contemporary artistic practices on the African continent under a single label. nnThe publication will include text contributions by Toma Muteba Luntumbue, Johannes Fabian, Yousouf Tati Ciss?, Tobias Wendl and others, as well as contributions by all participating artists.‎
