Part I : Becoming a Historian ; Part II : 'L'Affaire Perken': A Double Murder on the Franco-Dutch border, 1809 ; Part III : A View on the Street: Seduction and Pregnancy in Revolutionary Lyon. — "L'Affaire Perken" describes the real-life murder of an innkeeper and his wife on the Franco-Dutch border in 1809. It takes the reader on an evocative and colourful journey into the early 19th century world of the poor and laborious. – "A View on the Street" exploits the records of the French Ministry of Justice for Lyon in the 1790s, concentrating on what is to be learnt from the 'declarations de grossesse' – official declarations which every woman expecting an illegitimate child was obliged to make before the court. It is a heart-rending excusion into the social life and morality of the French revolutionary period. These two pieces are preceded, and linked, by an account of the author's schooldays in the 1930s during which he became aware of the relationship between topography and history and the special quality of life that he always has since discerned in land frontiers. The author was Professor of Modern History at Oxford.
