In the days of the siege of the monastery by the Poles he was in Moscow; in 1610 he received confirmation of the monasterys rights from Polish King Sigismund III bribing the latter with lavish gifts; in 1612 he assisted the rebels under Minin and Pozharsky; in 1618 he led the defense of the monastery against the Polish army. His tale of the monasterys siege is a source of valuable information from the history of troubled times a very rare book. ‎Gravure anglaise figurant le siège de la ville de Lille (1708) lors la Guerre de Succession d’Espagne (1701-1714). La gravure présente le Duc de Malbourough guidant ses troupes devant la ville et la forteresse de Vauban bombardée. Gravée par G. Du Rosc d'après Benoist. Notre gravure semble pourtant reprendre une composition gravée par Pass d'après Godefroy nommée An exact representation of the siege of Lille by John Duke of Malbourough conservée au National Army Museum à Londres. L'armée alliée dirigée par le Duc de Malbourough regroupait des contingents anglais et hollandais, des Danois, ainsi que des troupes du Saint-Empire : des hommes originaires de Hanovre, du Palatinat et de la Hesse.
