First French translation (vol. 1 of 2 only) of Wheler’s famous work on the Levant: ““one of the most important accounts of travels in the Levant, and the first description of Athens which was systematic, detailed and trustworthy"" (Blackmer). ""Wheler was especially interested in botany and topography. The map is very interesting. Wheler's work remained the standard English book on Greece for many years. It represents, together with Spon's book in French, the first attempt at a systematic topographical description based upon explorations"" (Ibid.).

Later edition of the fictional voyage the young Anacharsis travels in Greece. ""In the form of a fiction which allowed the author to expose a host of facts and secondary notions that would tire in many treatises, the Voyage de Anacharsis provides an in-depth knowledge of the religious, civil, literary and philosophical history of the most enlightened nation of antiquity. It is a masterpiece of erudition, composition and style."" (Larousse) The novel had a profound influence across Europe and the United States. First edition of Bröndsted's magnum opus, his pioneering ""Travels and Archaeological Researches in Greece"". The work is based on Bröndsted's extensive travels in Greece, and especially the second part, which contains a major study of the Parthenon, is of great significance. ""Bröndsted was trained in Denmark as an archaeologist and philologist. After travelling in France and Italy for some years he left Italy in 1810 on the company of Haller van Hallerstein, Linckh and Stackelberg with the intention of exploring Greece and Asia Minor. This group was involved in the excavations at Aegina, and together with Cockerell and Foster they also excavated at Bassae."" (Blackmer, 214).
