The first octavo edition, published the same year as the first quarto edition, of the famous account of the La Perouse-expedition to Australia and the surrounding islands. The La Pérouse expedition was a French naval expedition led by Jean-François de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse. The primary objectives of the expedition were scientific exploration, mapping uncharted territories, and establishing trade relations. Unfortunately, the expedition met a tragic end when La Pérouse's ships disappeared, and the fate of the crew remained unknown for several years. The search for La Pérouse's expedition became one of the most significant maritime mysteries of the 18th century. Despite the tragic outcome, the knowledge and discoveries made during the expedition had a lasting impact on the understanding of the Pacific region and contributed to the broader scientific and exploratory efforts of the time.
