A classic work on deaf-mutes. First edition with this title, but It is really a new edition of the authors ""Institution des Sourds et Muets, par la voie des Signes méthodiques."" 1776 (Heirs of Hippocrates,920). In 1791 L'Épée's school became the Institution Nationale des Sourds Muets. ""The Abbé de L'Épée met two deaf girls, decided to educate them, and soon had a class of 60 devoted pupils, whom he supported and amongst whom he lived. He based his methods on those of Bonnet and Amman, and was the first to attach great importence to signs."" (Garrison & Morton,3359).
