Scarce first edition of Heine's main work. He treated the problem of potential for the exterior of an ellipsoid of revolution and for the shell between confocal ellipsoids of revolution, introduced spherical harmonics of the second kind, which provide a second independent solution of Legendre's problem. The second edition of this importent work (1878-81), was a standard compendium on spherical functions for many years.
