Il est précédé par une introduction à l'histoire, la forme, la prononciation et l'utilisation des caractères chinois. Il se clôt sur un double index, un en caractères chinois, répartis selon le classement du K'ang hi tseu tien, et l'autre en anglais. L'auteur, Bernhard Karlgren (1889-1978) était un sinologue et philologue suédois qui s'est notamment intéressé à l'histoire de la phonologie du chinois, en cherchant à retrouver la prononciation des langues chinoises anciennes.
