(1870)

‎Buddhaghosha's Parables: Translated from Burmese By Cptain T.- Rogers. With and Introduction, containing Buddha's Dhammapada, Or ""Path of Virtue"", trnslated frm Pâli By Max Müller. - [FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE DHAMMAPADA]‎

CLXXII, (206), 24 (advertisements) pp. ‎

‎Scarce first edition of the highly influential first English translation of the Dhammapada, along with Buddhaghosha’s Parables. Excerpts of the Dhammapada had appeared in English in the periodical The Friend printed in Colombo, Sri Lanka, but a full English translation, which is based upon Fausböll’s version (from 1855, being the first European edition of a complete Pali-text as well as the first Latin translation of the Dhammapada), only appeared in 1870. Today, the Dhammapada is probably the most frequently translated Buddhist text in the world. The Dhammapada, the extremely influential collection of sayings of the Buddha in verse form, constitutes one of the most widely read and best known Buddhist scriptures. The original version of the Dhammapada is in the Khuddaka Nikaya, a division of the Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism. Each saying recorded in the collection was made on a different occasion in response to a unique situation that had arisen in the life of the Buddha and his monastic community. “The Dhammapada is the best known and most widely esteemed text in the Pali Tipitaka, the sacred scriptures of Theravada Buddhism. The work is included in the Khuddaka Nikaya (""Minor Collection"") of the Sutta Pitaka, but its popularity has raised it far above the single niche it occupies in the scriptures to the ranks of a world religious classic. Composed in the ancient Pali language, this slim anthology of verses constitutes a perfect compendium of the Buddha's teaching, comprising between its covers all the essential principles elaborated at length in the forty-odd volumes of the Pali canon.” (The Dhammapada. The Buddha's Path of Wisdom. Translated from the Pali by Acharya Buddharakkhita with an Introduction by Bhikkhu Bodhi, 1996). Buddhist tradition has it that shortly after the passing away of the Lord Buddha, five hundred of his disciples met in council at Rajagaha in order to recall the truths they had received from their spiritual teacher during the previous forty-five years. They wanted these truths about moral and spiritual conduct to live on forever and for Buddha’s message to be available for all future disciples. The followers and Arhat felt the responsibility to convey the teaching and discipline of the Buddhist order as faithfully and truly as possible, and having no written texts to rely on, they prepared the many discourses for recitation with repetitions in various contexts, so that they could be remembered. Like the verses of Homer and other ancient works that were only written down later. “At that time, according to the Sinhalese, the Dhammapada was orally assembled from the sayings of Gautama given on some three hundred different occasions. Put in verse form the couplets contrast the vanity of hypocrisy, false pride, heedlessness, and selfish desire with the virtues of truthfulness, modesty, vigilance, and self-abnegation. The admonitions are age-old, yet they strike home today, their austerity of purpose fittingly relieved by gentle humor and earthy simile. Subsequently, several renditions of the Dhammapada in the Sanskrit and Chinese languages came into circulation" likewise, a number of stanzas are to be found almost verbatim in other texts of the canonical literature, testifying to the esteem in which its content was anciently held. Since first collated, the Dhammapada has become one of the best loved of Buddhist scriptures, recited daily by millions of devotees who chant its verses in Pali or in their native dialect.” (Bodhi, 1996). “The Dhammapada, an anthology of verses attributed to the Buddha, has long been recognized as one of the masterpieces of early Buddhist literature. Only more recently have scholars realized that it is also one of the early masterpieces in the Indian tradition of kavya, or belles lettres.” (The Dhammapada. A Translation. translated from the Pali by Thanissaro Bhikkhu). Buddhaghosha's Parables is a collection of Buddhist stories and moral lessons compiled by the Indian scholar and monk Buddhaghosha in the 5th century CE. The present first English translation includes 50 parables that illustrate various aspects of Buddhist philosophy and ethics. The stories cover a wide range of topics, from the importance of mindfulness and the dangers of attachment, to the virtues of compassion and the nature of enlightenment. Each parable is accompanied by a commentary that explains its meaning and relevance to Buddhist practice.‎

‎Beautiful work written by Yamada Isai with illustrations by Katsushika Hokusai consisting 55 episodes in the life of Shaka (Buddah). Hokusai has made 35 illustrations for 27 episodes, and 23 of those are new iconographies in Shaka’s biography, inspired by various pictorial resources, while other 12 scenes originate in the former or traditional ones of these subjects. With thirty-two monochrome illustrations and covers various events, starting from the court of King Suddhodana, the Buddha's father, before his birth in the Indian kingdom of Kapilavastu, and ending with the distribution of the Buddha's relics after his death. Throughout Asia, depictions of the Buddha's life have followed common narrative structures and artistic conventions for centuries. There is no single authoritative textual source for the Buddha's life story, so visual narratives have relied on well-known episodes, such as his birth as Prince Siddhartha, his renunciation of worldly life, his ascetic practice, attainment of enlightenment, and eventual death. These narratives have been adapted creatively to specific contexts, sometimes incorporating new episodes or extending the story beyond the Buddha's death. The Illustrated Record of the Life of Sukyamuni by Yamada Isai and Katsushika Hokusai can be compared to historical fiction rather than a strict historical account. Hokusai's illustrations, in particular, prioritize creative additions to the story over adhering strictly to canonical episodes. For example, the book does not depict the Buddha's death but focuses on other aspects such as familial conflicts, supernatural encounters, and scenes of hell. The included double-page illustration portrays a dramatic episode that concludes volume 1. The right-hand illustration shows the canonical episode of the Buddha's conception, where his mother, lady Maya, receives a dream indicating her pregnancy. However, the left-hand illustration deviates from the conventional depiction of Maya's sister, Gotami, as a benevolent aunt to the Buddha. Instead, she is portrayed as a jealous character transformed into a giant snake due to her envy. This aspect of the narrative draws inspiration not from the Buddha's life stories but from the tale of Lady Xi (468-499), a would-be empress during the Chinese Liang dynasty. Series: Archaeologisch onderzoek in Nederlandsch-Indië: III. Two text volumes in folio, pp.viii, 791, 2 plates; xv, 486, 82, text figures and plans; three large folio plate volumes with 642 photographic plates, 41 engraved plates (1 double page), and 9 folding plans. Limitation: The first text volume and accompanying plate volumes numbered No.74 of 200; the second text volume and accompanying plate volume numbered No.85 of 200. Only 165 copies were for sale. A monumental archaeological and architectural study of Borobudur with 642 photographic illustrations of the reliefs, including those illustrating the life of the Buddha and scenes from the Jataka, the Ganawyuha, Maitreya, Bodhisattwa and Samantabhadra, and statues of Buddha, together with line drawings showing architectural details of the complex.During the great restoration of Barabudur, 1907-11, under the direction of the military engineer Theodor van Erp, a complete series of more than 2000 photographs of the monument were taken by Jean Jacques de Vink, 1883-1945 and a series of drawings were made by the Javanese artist, Mas Kartodisastro. These form the basis of this comprehensive monograph on the monument produced in two parts with publication spanned a period of twelve years. The first volume, Archaeological Description, by the Director of the Archaeological Survey of Indonesia, Nicolaas Johannes Krom, 1883-1945, consists of two volumes of text and two large portfolios of 440 plates depicting the complete series of reliefs and Buddha images. The second volume, Architectural Description (Bouwkundige Beschrijving) by Theodor van Erp has one volume of text (in Dutch, never translated)) and a large portfolio with 48 detailed ground plans, sections of terraces and elevations of galleries, and 202 photographic plates showing the monument before and after restoration, objects believed to have come from Barabudur, and free standing sculptures. The remarkable remains of Borobudur were re-discovered in 1814, by H.C. Cornelius, a Dutch engineer, who had been sent to investigate by Thomas Stamford Raffles, British Governor of Java. Cornelius with his 200 men cut down trees, burned down vegetation and dug away earth to reveal the long-hidden monument. He was unable to unearth all galleries for danger of collapse. The first attempt to record the splendour of the monument was in 1848 when F.C. Wilsen began four years work drawing copies of 988 reliefs. These were published by Leemans in 1873 in two large portfolios, but were considered to be neither artistic nor suitable for scientific study. A second attempt was begun in 1863 when von Kinsbergen was commissioned to photograph Borobudur, but he was unable to complete the task, partly due to the difficulty of setting up his camera sufficiently far from the reliefs in the confined space of the galleries. This third attempt was undertaken during the extensive restoration of the monument between 1907 and 1911, under the supervision of Theodor van Erp, who dismantled and rebuilt the upper three circular platforms and stupas.Borobudur was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1991, 'to represent a masterpiece of human creative genius'.‎
