‎Très rare exemplaire réunissant la première édition française avec lédition allemande de ce remarquable traité du microscope par le physicien allemand Ledermüller (E.O. allemande : 1759-1762) somptueusement illustré. Martin Frobenius Ledermüller (1719-1769) avocat, naturaliste, microscopiste amateur et gardien de la collection d'histoire naturelle du margrave de Brandebourg-Culmbach, Frédéric. "L'auteur était un polymathe du XVIIIe siècle. Avocat de profession, Ledermüller montre un intérêt avisé pour l'art et la science de la botanique, ainsi que pour la science plus récente de la microscopie (Hunt). Ledermüller a commencé ses études microscopiques sous la direction de Christoph Jacob Trew (1695-1769 ; médecin et botaniste allemand) et s'intéresse particulièrement à l'adaptation des caméras obscures pour qu'elles puissent fonctionner comme des microscopes projectifs solaires afin d'observer de près les insectes. Amusement microscopique est la concrétisation des recherches de l'auteur concernant les microscopes et leur utilisation. Cet important travail montre en détail les nouvelles possibilités dobservations quoffre le microscope, une technologie alors de plus en plus performante. Destiné à séduire et surprendre un public avide de curiosités, la qualité et la richesse de ses étonnantes et somptueuses illustrations en font un ancêtre remarquable de nos modernes publications de vulgarisation scientifique sur le sujet. En parcourant le livre, on se rappelle l'excitation de l'enfance lorsqu'on regardait pour la première fois des échantillons à la loupe: des ailes de papillon, des cristaux, des coquillages minuscules, des formes de vie microscopiques dans l'eau, des échantillons de tissus et de plantes, des empreintes digitales humaines, des puces, des mouches, etc. Dans ce guide du monde miniature se trouvent également des conseils pratiques pour la construction de microscopes, ainsi que différentes façons de visualiser des diapositives et de projeter des images à partir de caméras obscures. Les 152 gravures sur cuivre qui composent ces trois volumes ont été inspirées par la collection de spécimens d'histoire naturelle de Bayreuth appartenant au margrave de Brandebourg-Bayreuth. Les planches représentent les sujets des plus divers et surtout ce qui amusait l'auteur : moisissures diverses, camphre, mercure, sel, aile de papillon, dard d'une abeille, mollusques, morceau de liège, écaille de poisson, petit bout d'éponge, goutte de sang, poils divers, abricot, escargot, langue de boeuf, cochenille, mousse, brin d'herbe, bout de fil de Hollande, dentelle de Brabant, etc. Les illustrations des microscopes, des différentes pièces qui les composent et de leur manipulation sont particulièrement réussies. Le frontispice par Preissler est une allégorie de la nature et des sciences, et les planches, somptueusement aquarellées à la main et gravées par Winterschmidt ont été produites d'après les dessins de lauteur. Chacun des 3 volumes en français (y compris les suppléments et additions) sont suivis de leur texte respectif en allemand. Le troisième volume contient la "Réponse de Ledermüller à quelques objections et doutes à lui faits par Monsieur Le Baron de Gleichen laquelle servira de supplément aux amusens microscopiques avec une addition de lentrepreneur Adam Wolfgang Winterschmidt, accompagnée dune observation exacte de la façon dune mouche de chambre, qui avait plusieurs petits insectes sur elle, très soigneusement dessinée daprès nature, par la lentille microscopique nro. 5. As one flies through the book, one is reminded of the excitement of childhood when looking at samples under a magnifying glass for the first time: butterfly wings, crystals, tiny shells, microscopic life forms in water, tissue and plant samples, human fingerprints, fleas, flies, etc. Also included in this guide to the miniature world are practical tips for building microscopes, as well as various ways to view slides and project images from dark cameras. The 152 copper engravings that make up these three volumes were inspired by the Bayreuth collection of natural history specimens owned by the Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth. The plates represent the most diverse subjects and especially what amused the author: various molds, camphor, mercury, salt, butterfly wing, sting of a bee, mollusks, piece of cork, fish scale, small piece of sponge, drop of blood, various hairs, apricot, snail, ox tongue, cochineal, moss, blade of grass, piece of Dutch thread, Brabant lace, etc. The illustrations of the microscopes, of the different parts that compose them and of their manipulation are particularly successful. The frontispiece by Preissler is an allegory of nature and science, and the plates engraved by Winterschmidt and sumptuously hand watercolored, were produced from the author's drawings. Each of the 3 volumes in French (including supplements and additions) are followed by their respective text in German.
