Rare Thevenot jean (1633-1667) Première édition des voyages en Orient de Jean Thevenot, par le neveu de Melchisedec Thevenot. L'aîné Thevenot a beaucoup voyagé en Europe mais n'a rien publié sur ses voyages. Le jeune Thevenot, tout aussi curieux de voir les paysages, a voyagé beaucoup plus loin. Il est devenu particulièrement fasciné par l'Orient grâce à sa connaissance du célèbre orientaliste Herbelot qu'il a rencontré à Rome "en tant que voyageur, il était tout à fait libre des préjugés de l'époque, et a laissé des observations très intéressantes sur la mentalité des Turcs. Il aurait introduit le café en France"( Cox I, pp.14-15) Tavernier et Thévenot étaient tous deux en Inde en 1666 : "si nous écrivons une histoire de l'Inde, nous devrions préférer l'aide de Thévenot ; si nous recherchons une combinaison de lecture agréable et instructive, nous devrions nous tourner vers Tavernier" (Cox I, p.278). L'ouvrage a également été publié sous le titre Troisième partie des voyages de M. Thévenot, contenant la relation de l'Indostan (Paris-Barbin-1684), qui constitue la troisième partie de sa Relation d'un voyage fait au Levant (Paris-1665-1684) Cox I, p.278 First edition of Jean Thevenot's travels to the orient, by the nephew of Melchisedec Thevenot. The elder Thevenot travelled extensively in Europe but printed nothing about his journies. The younger Thevenot was equally curious about seeing the sights and travelled much farther afield. He became particulary fascinated by the Orient through his acquaiintance with the famous orientalist Herbelot whom he met in Rome «as a traveller he was quite free from the prejudices of the day, and has left very interesting observations on the mentality of the Turks. He is said to have introduced coffee into France»( Cox I, pp.14-15) Tavernier and Thevenot were both in india in 1666 «if we were writing a history of India we should prefer the aid of Thevenot; if we were seeking a combination of pleasant and instructive reading, we should turn to Tavernier» (Cox I, p.278). The work was also published under the title Troisième partie des voyages de M. Thevenot, contenant la relation de l'Indostan (Paris-Barbin-1684), which form the third part of his Relation d'un voyage fait au Levant (Paris-1665-1684) Cox I, p.278‎
