L'impression est sévère uniquement parce que l'auteur est protestant et rationaliste, qu'il dénigre les religieux de la Terre sainte, et cherche à donner une interprétation critique des livres saints. Jules de Bertou, archéologue amateur, et concordiste acharné, était en effet d'obédience catholique stricte ‎
