(mm. 350x232), p. pelle coeva, dorso a cordoni con titolo oro su tassello, tagli a spruzzo, 3 cc.nn., 1 c.b. (a noi mancante), 495 pp.num., 14 cc.nn. (Indice, registro). Il bel frontespizio figur. è inc. in rame da G.B. Coriolano e il volume è ornato da fregi, grandi iniziali e finali inc. su legno. Nel testo numerose belle xilografie raffigurano anche animali strani, centauri, mostri, ecc. Descrizione dei solipedi domestici, selvatici, esotici, leggendari. E' questa la IV ediz. col frontespizio recante la data della III. Cfr. Ceresoli, p. 41 e Cat. Piantanida,I,1696 che citano anche la I ediz. del 1616 - Nissen ZBI,72.Solo alcune carte con lievi uniformi arross., altrimenti esemplare ben conservato. "Il bolognese Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605), medico e naturalista enciclopedico, scrisse una storia degli animali di cui pubblicò 4 volumi (3 di Ornitologia e 1 di Insetti); altri 9 furono editi dopo la sua morte. Mente aperta e illuminata, fu uno dei migliori osservatori del suo tempo e precursore di Linneo". Così Diz. Treccani,I, p. 242.

In-folio, 36 cm, engraved title-page with the arms of Cardinal Giulio Sacchetti + (4)nn pp + (2)(bl) + 495 pp + (1)(bl) + (26)nn pp (index) + (1)(coloph.) + (1)(bl) (complete) ; with 12 woodcut illustrations ; 4 full page and 8 half-page on 10 pages, putti , headpieces, tailpieces and initial letters. Bound in full old leather, sprinkled edges, raised gilt spine, binding worn, upper joint partly split, lower corner of upper board worn with loss of leather, headcap missing, interior fine and crisp. This is the fifth edition of Aldrovandi's illustrated encyclopedia of quadrupeds. The first was published posthumously in 1616. Real animals depicted include a zebra, a rhinoceros and an elephant but as a remnant of mediaeval times also depicted are a two legged centaur and horse-like creatures with a human head or with human hands. In fact most of the work deals with the horse, its history, its mythology and its use in war, transport , hunting and even as food. Krivatsky 184 , Graesse I 65."
