Questa importante storia del Giappone gives an account of the ancient and present State and Government of that Empire; of its temples, palaces, castles and other buildings; of its metals, minerals, trees, plants, animals, birds and fishes; of the chronology and succession of the emperors, ecclesiastical and secular; of the original descent, religions, customs, and manufactures of the natives, and of their trade and commerce with the Dutch and Chinese. Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716), naturalista, medico e grande viaggiatore tedesco trascorse 10 anni (1683-1693) in Asia sud Orientale. Nel 1690 fu nominato medico della Compagnia olandese delle Indie con sede a Nagasaki, dove rimase per due anni, 1690-92. Le sue escursioni all'interno posero le basi per la realizzazione delle pi accurate carte geografiche del paese. Il resoconto illustrato dei suoi viaggi e delle sue osservazioni sono considerati il primo erudito studio sul Giappone del XVII secolo, fatto da un occidentale, uno studio che grandemente influenz la considerazione del Giappone da parte degli Europei per tutto il diciottesimo e diciannovesimo secolo e l'opera di Kaempfer senza dubbio la fonte pi importante per gli storici sul periodo Tokugawa.<br>Con la pubblicazione della sua History of Japan nel 1727, Kaempfer fu immortalato quale primo interprete del Giappone. La sua opera considerata una enciclopedica e vastamente illustrata descrizione del paese, di Nagasaki, di due ambasciate a Edo e delle citt visitate; vi figurano anche rapporti sull'agopuntura, sul te, la carta giapponese, sull'uso dell'oppio e della cannabis; di grande valore le sue osservazioni di botanica (molto apprezzate da Linneo che adott la nomenclatura di Kaempfer). Kaempfer scrisse il suo monumentale lavoro in tedesco, sua lingua originale, ma fu pubblicato per la prima volta in inglese, in una traduzione del manoscritto autografo che era stato acquistato da Sir Hans Sloane (uno dei fondatori del British Museum).Solo 1 carta con strappo al marg. infer., altrimenti fresco e bell'esemplare.‎
