‎Jean Fautrier (1898-1964) est un artiste majeur du XXe si cle. Form la Royal Academy, de Londres, influenc par J. M. W. Turner, rapidement remarqu , en 1923, par la collectionneuse Jeanne Castel, son style est d'abord figuratif et joue sur les contrastes de lumi re. Il puise dans le r el pour mieux le transfigurer, il renouvelle les genres du paysage, de la nature morte et du nu (notamment avec sa s rie des ouvres noires) au cours de l'entre-deux-guerres. Quelques ann es plus tard, son approche change radicalement et devient beaucoup plus abstraite. Il inaugure le mouvement de l'art dit informel, par lequel il joue avec la mati re picturale, combine diff rents mat riaux, cr ant des visions d'une extraordinaire mat rialit . Proche des plus grandes figures intellectuelles de son poque, telles que Jean Paulhan, Paul luard, Francis Ponge, Ren Char ou encore Andr Malraux, Fautrier n'aura de cesse de produire des ouvres engag es et d'une remarquable force, comme en t moignent ses s ries notables Otages (1943-1945), Objets (1947-1948), Partisans (1956). En 1960, il re oit le prix de peinture de la Biennale de Venise. Riche d'une iconographie extraordinairement compl te, ce premier catalogue raisonn des peintures de Fautrier recense la technique, la provenance, les expositions et la bibliographie de chacune des ouvres. Il est enrichi par ailleurs d'une biographie d taill e, d'analyses techniques, de textes scientifiques de r f rence, mais aussi de transcriptions d'interviews et d' missions d' poque.‎
